The Rebbe’s prophecy about online shopping and electronic payment systems
On the 24th of Kislev, 5751 (12/1/1992) after lighting the first Chanukah candle during a world-wide public presentation of the Chanukah miracle, the Rebbe, King Moshiach spoke before the children in 770. During the speech, the Rebbe spoke prophetic words concerning revolutionary breakthroughs in technology which were supposed to happen at that time.
The Rebbe said the following:
Moreover, people can actually provide help in one moment (and not just notify about helping after which one needs to await in actually receiving that help)… A novelty that has occurred recently is that by means of a satellite, money can be transferred to a bank (or a food store, which is an advantage as there’s then no need to waste time on shopping) for someone else who can then receive that help (money) from the other side of the earth.
Several years went by and then…
In 1995, Amazon, the first on-line store opened where only books could be purchased. Several years later its inventory had mp3 recordings, software, video games, electronics, furniture, food items, and toys. Ten years later, the company had 200 thousand employees and revenue reached 134 billion dollars.
Also in 1995, eBay, the first online auction website was opened, its annual revenue is approximately 10 billion.
One of the first online payment systems – Paypal appeared in 1998. Today it has 200 million users.
Who could have imagined back in 1991 that only five or six years later the Rebbe’s words would become part of everyday reality. There are children growing up today for whom it’s entirely natural to order a toy through the Internet and expect to get within a few days. Also Jewish communities can receive funds from all over the world at any time day or night. This is a sign of the impending Redemption. Another one of the Rebbe’s prophecies has been fulfilled in front of our eyes!
Great job!
